Connecticut’s 2026 primary election delivered several closely watched contests, with Governor Ned Lamont and former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin emerging as the biggest Democratic winners.
Lamont defeated state Rep. Josh Elliott to secure the Democratic nomination for governor, putting him on track to seek an unprecedented third term. Bronin won the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District, defeating three challengers, including longtime incumbent Congressman John Larson, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest and Hartford attorney Ruth Fortune. Larson, who was first elected to Congress in 1998, had been seeking his 15th term.
Beyond the two high-profile Democratic contests, voters also weighed in on two Republican congressional primaries and 12 legislative primaries, nine Democratic and three Republican.
Several legislative races also drew significant attention, particularly contests involving incumbents. State Senator Doug McCrory was defeated in the 2nd Senate District, while state Rep. Pat Dillon trailed in the 92nd House District in New Haven as results came in.
With the primary contests now decided, attention will turn to the November general election and the races that will shape Connecticut’s congressional delegation and General Assembly for the next term.
